It is time again!

Waldorf Star Lanterns

Prepare the day before:

Make a 'wet on wet' watercolor painting on good quality paper.

Let dry and rub the back lightly with a cloth dipped in vegatable oil.

Leave overnight.

Cut big circles out of you paper,

I used a the biggest plate I could find in the house.

Fold in eight equal pieces.

Trim off the round bits with a ruler, scalpel/scissors.

Fold it in 16 equal pieces.

Fold a square,

unfold,

turn paper a 1/4,

fold square again.

Your paper looks like this.

Get the corners and fold backwards.

Unfold and turn 1/4,

fold a square again,

fold the other corners backwards,

unfold.

Your paper looks like this, with little diamond folds everywhere!

Those little diamonds are going to stay,

the big triangles need to be folded backwards.

(I know you are puzzled now,

but have a close look at your paper,

you will work it out!)

You See?

Big triangle is going backwards,

the little diamond is staying in front.

After a few triangles,

start to shape the bottom a bit.

Tada!

Hurry, make more before you'll forget!

I started my screen print on transfer paper project

Above is a test with Angobe color

on transfer paper

First to make,

A day after she was born

I started.

All the little moons

are drying now

for one week,

wrapped in plastic.

(otherwise they will dry to quickly and break)

They will go into the kiln

next Tuesday

to be heated for the first time

at 1050 degrees Celsius.

I thought i would be nice to share with you

the making of a porcelain mobile

So people,

like me a couple of months ago,

who don't have a clou what is involved

in making porcelain

could have a little peak

into a ceramic studio.

I used the tin as an inspiration for this screen print

It is different,

but the feel and colors similar.

I wished I knew the name of the designer

MYO: Rocket Garland Tutorial

I love making garlands. They are festive, fun and easy to make. They make a great gift and you can customize them really easy. In our house stars, rockets and spaceships are a favorite, so I made a garland in this theme but you can choose whatever you fancy. Anything goes!

You’ll need:
Cutting board
Scalpel/blade (or scissors)
Stamps (I made my own, but you can use any you like, preferably symmetrical)
Ink pad
Good quality craft Paper
Needle and thread & a cord

Cut out your prints with a scalpel and print the back too.

Take two identical prints.

In the first print,

you cut a vertical line from center to top,

in the second print from centre down.

Fold your cut out prints together.

The easiest way is to hang a cord in the right room and on the right place where the garland is supposed to be.
I used a fancy knitted cord and I used a shiny thread, both pale blue.

Assemble together & done!

At the age of 29, after relocating from The Netherlands to England, I enrolled at Winchester School of Art, to study for a BA in Textile Design. I remember that day so well. Students with big art projects under their arms, hallways filled with mini exhibitions. The moment I set foot in the building was the moment that changed my life! I said goodbye to my career in child psychiatry and never looked back. This is what I love to do.

A lot has happened since then. We have been blessed with three children, we moved back to The Netherlands and renovated our town house. Our youngest child is now one year old and I’ve just set up my little business. I truly love to make and create. My focus at the moment is on screen printing and paper cutting. My little online shop ‘Appeltaart‘ is taking a lot of time and effort with limited return money wise (yet!), but the joy and happiness, the lovely comments on my blog and doing what I really love on a daily basis, makes it worth having to eat peanut butter sandwiches for supper!

My wish for the future is to become successful enough to keep doing what I truly want. I am an artist. Hopefully within a year Iwill be earning a small salary to enable me to keep going and make investments in my company. My dreams are big. I would love to see my designs on pottery and ceramics and design all sorts of wallpaper. In the meantime, I’ll just keep working, improving and try to keep focus on where to go with ’Appeltaart‘.

Macrobiotic foods & baking

There is nothing better than healthy baking,

ones in a while.

My children do taste the difference

between butter and healthy oils,

sugar, little sugar and non sugar.

But even though they love the caramel taste of unrefined cane sugar,

I try to use as little

as possible.

Deco (have a look for inspiration!!!) is a well known health cook in Japan

I never heard from her,

but my sweet neighbor Miki

knew all about Macrobiotic cooking

and Deco's kitchen.

When she returned to Japan,

she was kind enough to send me this little cookbook

that I couldn't buy here.

The Banana Cake

dry:

200 ml whole wheat flour

400 ml unbleached wheat flower

1 ½ tbsp Baking Powder

½ tsp Salt

½ tbsp Grain Coffee Powder (i use Lima Yannoh instant Vanilla)

wet:

5 banana's (4 mix, 1 decoration)

50 ml Canola oil (i used rice bran)

150 g silken tofu

100 ml Apple juice

vanilla extract (don't forget!)

Optional (I do to add debt in taste) : Chopped walnuts

Dissolve grain coffee powder in heated apple juice

Puree 4 bananas, remaining wet ingredients and coffee juice

Add wet into mixed dry ingredients and chopped nuts

Decorate with sliced banana

Bake for 20 minutes at 180 degrees

Cover with aluminum foil and bake for a further 15 minutes at 200 degrees.

Note: don't over-bake, it will be very dry.

Can anyone resist the suburb Dutch grown Lambada strawberries?

they pop up in every veggie store.

We ate 1 box three days ago,

2 boxes yesterday

and three today!

We decided we needed Jamie's Butternut Squash Muffins to go with them (we used only 1/3 of the sugar, still sweet enough!)

I think it is a hit, we all loved them.
(that explains the super sized photo...;-)

Tomorrow we'll go for Miki's macrobiotic sugarless vegan banana cake (totally yum). If anyone is interested, i'll post the recipe.

we cooked on a hob

(1 of the 3 worldwide).

The thing costs 250.000 Euro

isn't that bizarre?

It is made out of steel

designed for submarines.

You need an extra fundament under your house

to carry the thing.

I looks like a ship.

Personally I would spent my money on different things.

But still,

it is very special to be in a kitchen

were all the grand cooks

from all over the world

come together to have a look at this machine

and cook with each other

(El Bulli!).

We had a fun night.
